How can one reduce the amount of memory GNOME uses?

Tags:

Hello,

while some might find it normal that something like a system clock on a desktop uses 10MB-20MB of memory I find it totally unacceptable. My C64 could have displayed a nicer clock with only 64KB of RAM and with a resolution of 320x200 pixels :-(

Where should one start to reduce memory usage of the GNOME desktop and its application?

There is work in progress

As I was now searching for more information about this I have come across a section at the GNOME project's web site, which already deals with this problem. So it is recognized and there is work in progress (and one can even help).

here's a solution.

apt-get remove --purge gnome
apt-get install fluxbox

Sorry, couldn't resist the temptation.
