No sound, and no error messages!

Tags:

Hi... The sound of my computer stopped working. I use ALSA, and my board is an Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM AC'97.

It stopped from nowhere!... I didn't install anything, I just turned on my computer, and couldn't listen to anything...

Actually, I can play CDs, and the terminal beep works, but when I open mplayer, it says it is playing the file, but no sound comes out...

It looks like everything is OK in the mixer programs I tried to execute. I tried to run alsaconf, but no effect.

Suggestions??... :(

No sound, and no error

Do you have several audio devices? If you have onboard audio and a card as well, you may be playing sound via onboard audio.

Aside from the volume, check to make sure the channels are not mute, or the mixer for that channel is turned down. Use the alsamixer from an X terminal; the graphical mixers often don't list the controls correctly.

No sound, and no error

I often use aumix and alsamixer (I'm a vtwm guy), tried to change all controls up and down, muted and unmuted... No effect!...

The microphone also works... But not the sound. What "channel" controls the output of computer generated sound? the "PCM"?...

I olny have one sound board (on-board).

I also tried booting from a Knoppix live CD, but the same happened: mic and cd OK, but no output from programs...

I also tried both ALSA and OSS, both in Debian and in Knoppix (once I had a similar problem in my gf's box, but when I tried to play via OSS it worked...)

So, when do you think I should declare the time-of-death of my sound board?? :((( Should I try to install a w1nd0w$ here, since it's more reliable to let them capitalist pigs work together??? :PPPP

This sucks... I was just about to start some experiments, and I really needed my board so mch right now! :S

No sound, and no error

OK, more info, the CD sound is now very distorted, and when I mute EVERYTHING in alsamixer, neither the CD or the mic get muted. Plus there is a bad contact in the mic connector! :Q

There were some strong lightnings the other day here... Could it be that just my sound board got fried somehow?? :/

No sound, and no error

Electronic components do fail (but you have to be unlucky). If you haven't played with the BIOS settings then it may be a fried chip. Lightning is not usually a problem since a surge through to the low voltage side would most likely destroy many chips rather than just one. You didn't accidentally connect an amplifier output to the output stage of your sound chip? On the other hand if you have el-cheapo 'Dell' speakers or similar attached, a surge from a lightning strike could go from your speaker set to the chip and fry it.

Those Belkin surge arresters are really good - they saved a lot of my equipment from a near direct strike (only a few weeks after installing them). The surge arresters were casualties though - so I had to go out and spend more $$$ to replace them.

The 'PCM' mixer is the one that usually plays sound through your device. If your CD has a digital or analog wire direct to the sound device then the CD will be controlled via the "CD" mixer.

Is the volume from the CD still normal or do you have to turn the volume on the amp all the way up to get anything?

Also check that you don't have multiple sound drivers loaded - sometimes this does happen (OSS and Alsa) and things go bad:
lsmod|less

The OSS drivers have names like 'emu10k1' and the Alsa drivers usually have similar names but with 'snd' as prefix (snd-emu10k1)

If you haven't played with BIOS settings, since you say you've tried running from a live CD, there's a good chance you do have a fried chip. (But check all the other things first.)
