Has the Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 PDA been discontinued?!Hi, I have finally decided to invest into a PDA and after some thinking I think I want to get the Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 and install OpenZaurus on it. But I do not see the Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 PDA on Sharp's website, nor do I see it on Amazon. Has this PDA been discontinued? There are places which sell it used, but my concern is that the batteries sold on old units will be worn out. This is even a risk with new batteries which might have never been used, but which have been produced many years ago. Can anyone please point me to a good place to purchase one of these PDA? Thanks, VS |
Well, ...
I don't know about Zaurus, what i did is to install Familiar linux onto my iPaq. So you could check www.handhelds.org for compatibility with any new cool&fancy PDAs on the market.
However, in retrospective, one should install familiar _only_ if it is fully compatible with the PDA - it's easy to see what work or not from BUG lists and/or mailing list.
This is because it can happen that annoying bugs don't get to be fixed in the lifetime of your machine. E.g. i didn't have sound working 2 yrs ago on iPaq 3970, and today still i do not have sound working. Also, there might be some issues about updating software (i don't know if they installed the support for USB, or it is serial still, i think they did....).
Bottomline is, like with any combination of sleek new hardware made by non-free standards and Linux, it might make your life diffuclt, but again it can happen that it works.
Oh, yes but u wanted Zaurus.... :)
