US Robotics PCI modem help

I have a fax server that I am setting up with Debian/etch. I am trying to use a US Robotics 56k model 0778 modem. I have installed the Hylafax software and run through the setup but cannot get the software to find my modem. I then installed minicom and ran through that and still have no luck I can not get the minicom to even dial out with the modem. I have 2 of the same modem on hand and have tried both. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I haven't touched a US Robotics modem in many years - unfortunately they were one of the first converts to 'software modems' and they have always been extremely secretive. If that modem is a 'software' type, good luck getting it going.
