I have been trying to get a movie player that will play "WMV" files.
Most of my friends use Windows, so when they send e-mail with these type of files, I cannot open them.
"Totum" sayes that I need extra Codecs.
Please help, but make it simple, I am a newbe.
If you're running the current stable version of Debian (i.e. Etch), then it is just a matter of installing the ffmpeg gstreamer plugin (gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg).
Do so using e.g. the Synaptic package manager. Totem will (should) now play the wmv.
If that didn't help (some more recent wmv's or whatever reason), try using MPlayer with the w32codecs.
See www.debian-multimedia.org for more info.
Short help: add the following line to the list of repositories in Synaptic (menu Settings -> Repositories -> New):
Update and install the package 'mplayer' and 'w32codecs'.
If that succeeded you should now be able to use MPlayer instead of totem for the problematic files.
Simplicity depends on what version of Debian you're running
Hi there

Short help: add the following line to the list of repositories in Synaptic (menu Settings -> Repositories -> New):
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main
Update and install the package 'mplayer' and 'w32codecs'.
If that succeeded you should now be able to use MPlayer instead of totem for the problematic files.
Cheers, Georg
Cannot play ".wmv" files
I think I use 'vlc' on the rare occasion that I have one of those horrible M$ formats.
