Editing source addresses in aptGreetings peeps. Whilst reading a reply on this forum I noticed that a reader had seen the digits ".us." within a source address and, being British I assume, he deleted it. Apparently, he reported, without harm. I tried it and apt quickly told me that I "would no longer reach" a number of items. So I put the offending bits back - all OK again. I assume there are "agreed" source lists, probably country-specific. Can anyone advise me? I'm beginning to feel that my set-up may not be as secure as I think it is ... TIA, phorepents (running Etch on PC) |

Mirrors for (sanctioned) sources are all on the Debian site:
www.debian.org/mirrors
The 'us' part may only indicate that the mirror is in the USA. There aren't that many mirrors for the sources and it's not unusual to have to use one of the US sites for something. The usual practice is to look at the mirror list for the closest to you and if there is no convenient one then you might think of using a US site. Of course if you're in the USA it would be silly to use any other mirrors.
These days we don't purge anything 'UK' - we love you all because you're so fluffy and funny, especially with those crooked teeth. But contrary to what Dubbyah would like the world to think, we freedom-loving people do not welcome your monarch to our country. The worshippers of the queen, Fergie, and Diana are just the residual loyalists that we didn't bother to get rid of after 1776 because they had already convincingly lost the war.

Hi pinniped - my thanks for the advice - of course like many sensible things it was not at first obvious to me. It is a bright mark on this forum that such numpty (the anglicized form of Bush) questions always seem to be answered.
As to your words, from between my gritted but well-aligned plastic teeth I have to say America doesn't seem to welcome anyone at all these days - but hey, you liked the Beatles, so you can't be all bad ...
And thanks again.

No, we don't welcome anyone anymore (except for the Sauds, but that's because they own half of the USA these days). We've also given up on the French ideal of brotherhood - after all it's a French idea and we don't like them; they haven't been of much use to us since supporting the war for independence. It's also so much more fun (and safer) to kick the underdogs - Dubbyah's having a grand time demonizing illegal immigrants. After all, illegal immigrants are the source of all our problems, including the reelection of Dubbyah. It's much more popular and much more fun than addressing real problems like our current inability to compete in a global market (except for the really high-end tech stuff, but Israel and India will soon fix that problem).
