Etch does not find Windows shared printersSetting up a laptop to run on a home network. Cannot install the shared printer which is on a Windows XP computer. The foomatic-gui add a printer procedure fails at the Detect network printers button. It looks busy for a short time but nothing is produced. Is there somewhere to look for error messages? Is this the right way to install this printer? |
try cups?
In cups, I had success with a shared printer attached to Windows XP. I downloaded the PPD file from openprinting.org, and used smb://WindowsHostName/PrinterName when prompted in the cups web interface.
With Samba CUPS works but driver does not
Thanks for your reply. After writing the original message I installed Samba and have been overwhelmed with the documentation and choices. Your form for finding the printer is much appreciated. It worked. The printer is an HP DeskJet 540 but there is only a driver for a 540C, a later model. With this driver the test page will not print. In order to focus on the driver I connected the printer directly to the laptop (parallel cable) and got the same results. CUPS nicely found the local printer. I also tried the other 540C driver and the 520 drivers but nothing produced a test page. The merit of this old low resolution B/W printer is the inexpensive ink cartridge. Anybody know of a driver for the HP DeskJet 540?
My color printer is an HP Photosmart D7160 which appears to be too new to have a driver. The D7100 driver does not print a test page. I am uncertain about connecting to the laptop because it uses the USB buss.
Is there any way out of this quandry?
my previous method
Here is the way I used to print from Debian to a printer attached to Windows. Basically, you set up the printer on Windows as a ghostscript printer, then send your printer command over ssh. A bit of work, and not elegant, but it worked for a printer that only had a Windows driver.
