Installed xine-ui but it is not there

Very recent Debian installation.
This all started with totem saying it needed the cook codec. I copied the mplayer codec package in /usr/local/lib/codecs and the win32 places suggested
by various help sites, but nothing. In particular no documentation about the name of totems config file or where it should be. It seems I have totem with the xine backend, but again no documentation about what needs to be in .xine.
So I tried to install xine-ui via synaptic, it seemed happy to do this but then there did not seem to be xine-ui in the path or manpages.
There is something called xine-check which tells me I have xine in two places
/usr/bin/X11/xine
/usr/bin/xine
and that
no xine-config on this machine.
This means that xine-lib is either not installed
or it is installed in a very unusual place.
But synaptic does not offer to install that... and it is not in locate.
Any ideas?
