Debian 4 on Dell box restarts randomly

I have Debian 4 installed on a reasonably new dual-proc Dell box and it was working just great ... until I moved it to a new location! Now it randomly restarts itself about once a day and loses its network configuration each time, reverting to DHCP when I want it to have a static IP.

What's different about the new location: It's sitting vertically instead of horizontally, probably has a little less air space, is plugged into a different UPS than before.

The UPS is likely not an issue, since another server plugged into the same UPS has been running continuously.

I don't have the exact specs handy, because someone locked the *&^*&^(* room! I'll try the obvious stuff as soon as I can get in there ...

Anyone have a similar experience? Email me personally and let me know ... thanks!

Debian 4 on Dell box

Network configuration problem is not a result of the reboots; you just need to edit your /etc/network/interfaces file and put in appropriate settings. If you have multiple network adapters you should also check the udev scripts and make sure they're named the way you want.

Any number of things can cause a random reboot, including:
> bad RAM
> underrated power supply
> buggy hardware
> buggy driver

The problem must have existed even in the old location; the machine just wasn't being put into a condition that caused a reboot.

One thing to do is to divert all system logs to the serial port and make sure they are being recorded by another machine. You can search the logs for anything which might indicate where the problem is.
